In 1955, Mississippi shopkeeper Roy Bryant, a white man, murdered Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy, because his wife Caroline claimed he harassed her. In the same year, one town over, Clinton and Beulah Melton, a black couple, were murdered in racially motivated attacks -- and their killers were acquitted. "Benevolence" takes a close up look at the lives of the two couples in the days surrounding these twin tragedies to consider the question of justice and how it's applied.
